What Would You Fight For?
In Haiti, one of the least developed countries in the world millions of people face serious health challenges caused by poverty, limited healthcare access, and inadequate sanitation systems. Among these challenges is lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, a devastating mosquito-borne disease that causes severe swelling of the limbs and can lead to lifelong disability and social isolation.
This video follows the inspiring work of students and researchers from the University of Notre Dame, including college student Tyler Savinoa, who spent his summer in Haiti working alongside scientists and local communities to combat this disease. Through research, compassion, and direct engagement with affected individuals, these students are helping to restore dignity and hope to those living with lymphatic filariasis.
Since 1997, Notre Dame working in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has led one of the world’s most impactful initiatives to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. Under the leadership of biologist Father Thomas Streit, the program delivers mass treatments to more than 1.3 million people every year, working to break the cycle of transmission and protect future generations.
This story highlights the power of research, service, and global collaboration in the fight against neglected tropical diseases and asks a powerful question: What would you fight for?
